Earth Day 2023: Farmers and Ranchers Invest in our Planet

On farms and ranches, every day is Earth Day. Farmers work to conserve natural resources while producing food, fiber and fuel for people in their communities and around the world.

Fourth-generation farmer, Alex from Nebraska, shares how proud he is of his farm. “Some of the ground that we own has been in our family 100 years and we hope to continue that legacy and do it another 100 years,” said Alex. “I really appreciate all the work that those before have done to get us to where we are today, and to be able to be effective and relevant in the marketplace.”

That commitment to the land remains true for today’s farmers and those who work alongside them. “I have a quote in my office that says, ‘we do not inherit this ground from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children,’” says Amanda Breitbarth, agronomist at Central Valley Ag. “So that’s why it’s very important for us when we are growing and using our soil to make sure that we still have every nutrient in there that we can use in the future.”

This year’s theme “Invest in our Planet” from Earth Day Organizer highlights the responsibility producers share in doing what needs to be done to make sure everyone enjoys the benefits of clean and plentiful water and healthy soils, ecosystem and wildlife habitats.

“Invest in Our Planet” is what those that have made the land their passion, career and lifestyle embody.

“We try to do everything that we can to maintain the soil, make sure we’re getting our highest nutrients out of it and the highest yield that we can while preserving it for our children,” said Breitbarth.
